News: Stars dropped to Reserves, and Ryo to début

by on February 21, 2012

Hello everyone and a happy Tuesday to you all. I’ve already spoken about last week on my weekly column for The 6 Pointer so give it a read if you haven’t already! If you’re hoping for reaction to last week then you can find it there.

Time for some news then. Where to start? The Reserves are visiting Norwich today and they’re attracting more than the usual modicum of interest because they’re set to contain some stellar names, at least as Reserve matches go. Marouane Chamakh, Park Chu-Young and Andrei Arshavin have been all been given the chance to stake their claims for squad places ahead of this weekend’s match. Yossi Benayoun has also requested permission to play to prove his worth. Kieran Gibbs did the same, but he picked up a small knock in training. It’s not much and the club are assessing it at the moment, but he’s being left out of the match as a precaution. Carl Jenkinson is back from injury and rumours are that he could get 45 minutes, the same goes for Benik Afobe.

Emi Martinez isn’t in the squad for some reason, so James Shea is set to play in goal, while the rest of the team is set to be semi-familiar names with the likes of Miquel, Ozyakup and Yennaris available, as well as some less well-known names like Angha and Ansah. Here’s the full squad news. One player who won’t feature is Craig Eastmond, who has left on a one month loan to Wycombe Wanderers. When is he going to leave the club? About seventeen years?

Anyway, let’s talk about someone more promising. Ryo Miyaichi is particular. ‘Ryodinho’ as he was called at Feyenoord has been dubbed the Japanese Messi. A bit silly really. Messi is clearly the Argentinian Ryo. Anyway, I said a while ago that Bolton were contacted recently by the Japanese FA to let them know that he’s likely to be capped in their upcoming match against Uzbekistan. He’s made an impressive start at Bolton, including a classy finish against Millwall in the cup.

Here’s something nice, Per Mertesacker reckons he’ll be fit for Euro 2012. Isn’t that fantastic. Not. As you probably know, there was an AST meeting yesterday. I don’t intend to talk about it in depth, here’s a summary of what happened. As I said, I won’t speak about it much, but I will say that the fact we’ve been running at break-even for the last few years and will do for the next two years until the new commercial deals come in is somewhat worrying. There was the hope that Kroenke would buy us out of them so that we could get deals at the market rate, but nothing much materialised from that. What really is quite unbelievable, at least in my eyes, is that the manager has managed to keep us relatively competitive when the only profit he can make is from player sales. The worrying part is of course that we’ve tried acting sustainably which has made us less competitive than teams who spend recklessly and, should we miss out on the Champions League then we could become a loss-making club given the £45million it yields each year. That would of course have us falling foul of UEFA’s Financial Fair Play rules and banned from UEFA competitions. Of course that’s a worse case scenario, but it’s still somewhat worrying that a team can actually be punished for being run sustainably. I suppose that’ modern football.

Sam at Chronicles of Almunia has a piece which is definitely worth reading on the subject so, you… give it a read. Also, is sounds like contract talks have begun with Robin Van Persie. These are really expedient, so it’s not really that much to get excited about. No doubt we’ll hear all kinds of speculation about it over the next few weeks. There are also rumours that Kyle Bartley could come back to the club given the financial predicament Glasgow Rangers faces itself with [a fine example of where “spending some fucking money” can get you]. They paid the loan fee at the start of the season, but it’s likely that they’re still paying at least some of his wages. Anyone who follows me on twitter knows that I’m what @AMMueller would call “a Bartley fanboy” so obviously I’d be delighted if he came back. Saying that, it’s not confirmed yet.

One or two other things, the U18s won 3-0 at Fulham. Josh Rees scoring yet again. Jordan Wynter got his first goal at U18 level as well. Here’s the highlights. Finally, it looks like George Brislen-Hall is off to America. Maybe he’ll meet up with former Gunner Tom Cruise who was released in the summer and could also be off to America. I’m sure everyone at SavageGooner Towers wishes them well.

That’s it for today then tweeps, I’ll probably be tweeting about the Reserves later so give me a follow on twitter @SavageGooner and as always you can ‘like’ us on facebook. Until next time.

When is Ozyakup going to break into the first team? He must be close. Looks like a very smart and creative player who could make a difference to the first team.

    • He is, I think the club are looking to get him out on loan at the moment, but he’s not that keen on loans. He said before that he thinks they’re a waste of time, so it has to be the right club.
