Bolton Vs Arsenal – Match Report

by on February 1, 2012

A goalless draw between Arsenal and Bolton at the Reebok Stadium this evening,it was a frustrating performance from the Gunners. French international Bacary Sagna made his first start for the Gunners since returning from injury. Which meant Francis Coquelin dropped to the bench for the North London side and Mikel Arteta also returned to starting line-up.

Arsenal’s starting line up – Szczesny, Sagna, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Vermaelen; Song, Arteta; Walcott, Ramsey, Chamberlain; VanPersie.

Subs: Fabianski, Coquelin, Rosicky, Benayoun, Arshavin, Park, Henry.

Arsenal’s first chance of the match came from Thomas Vermaelen’s cross and Van Persie’s header was cleared off the line by David Wheater. There wasn’t much power in the Dutchman’s header which meant it was a comfortable clearance by Wheater. Minutes later Van Persie played in Aaron Ramsey with a brilliant through-ball but the Welshman’s effort was straight at Ádám Bogdán. Great work from Arsenal’s captain who laid it back to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain just inside the Bolton box but the England U-21 international blasted wide. The Gunners should have been in the lead they had three good chances in the opening quarter of an hour.

David N’Gog got the better off French international Laurent Koscielny and shot from a tight angle but Wojciech Szczęsny produced a good save. Another chance fell of N’Gog after he controlled well but his effort went wide of the Arsenal goal, he should have done much better. Theo Walcott then wasted an excellent chance for the Gunners, the England international should have put his side in to the lead but failed to score. Arsenal were misplacing a lot of passes and were lacking that final pass.

Great play from Chamberlain getting past a number of players but eventually being brought down by Bolton defender Grétar Steinsson. Both sides went in at half-time goalless, both teams had wasted good chances in the first-half. N’Gog didn’t even get his effort on target and Arsenal had missed a few good chances throughout the first-half.

Opening ten minutes of the second-half was very much similar to the first-half, Arsenal had a lot of the ball being pressed by Bolton. A great cross from French international Bacary Sagna which Van Persie got on the end off but the Dutchman’s effort hit the post. Minutes later Chamberlain tried his luck from distance but his shot just went over.

On the 68th minute Arsène Wenger made Arsenal’s first substitution of the match taking off Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for Thierry Henry. Bolton were having a good spell, having a number of corners midway through the second-half. Koscielny made a vital block from N’Gog’s header, the French defender didn’t know much about it.

Bolton made there first substitution of the match taking off David N’Gog for Kevin Davies. Brilliant play from Van Persie his chipped effort hit Bolton’s crossbar. Arsenal made there second substitution taking off Aaron Ramsey for Tomáš Rosický. Szczęsny was forced to rush out of his goal and clear the ball away from Mark Davies, the Bolton midfielder went down there were some some penalty claims. But the referee told Davies to get up it was very debatable.

The match finished goalless, Bolton being the better side in the second-half. Very poor finishing cost Arsenal in the first-half they could have been a couple of goals in the lead if Ramsey and Walcott done better with there chances. Arsenal next play Blackburn Rovers at the Emirates on the weekend.
