Arsenal Vs Manchester United Preview

by on January 20, 2012

Arsenal take on Manchester United on Sunday at the Emirates, the Gunners will be looking for revenge after the humiliating 8-2 defeat to Man Utd earlier this season. The North London side have lost their last two Premiership games which were defeats to Swansea City and Fulham. Man Utd got back to winning ways last weekend in the Premiership by defeating Bolton 3-0 at Old Trafford.

Arsène Wenger’s side are missing a number of players through injury and players at the African Cup of Nations. Thomas Vermaelen and Thierry Henry are both doubtful to be available for the Gunners on Sunday and the duo will have late fitness tests before the match. Spanish midfielder Mikel Arteta is ruled out of the match through a calf injury which saw the Spaniard miss the Swansea match last weekend.

Francis Coquelin is still absent with hamstring injury but should be back in training in a few days. Defenders Bacary Sagna and Kieran Gibbs are expected to return in the next couple of weeks with England international Jack Wilshere returning early in February. Some good news is Łukasz Fabiański is back for the North London side.

Long-term injuries are Brazilian defender Andre Santos and French international Abou Diaby. Gervinho and Marouane Chamakh won’t be available for the Gunners until mid February when the duo will return from the African Cup of Nations.

If Vermaelen doesn’t make the Man Utd game then it could mean reserve-team captain Ignasi Miquel will continue at left-back for the Gunners.

Possible Arsenal team- Szczęsny, Vermaelen, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Djoruou, Song, Rosický, Ramsey, Arshavin, Walcott, Van Persie

Bench – Fabiański, Squillaci, Yennaris, Benayoun, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Park Chu-Young, Henry.

(That’s if Vermaelen and Henry return for the Gunners)

Possible Man Utd team – Lindegaard, Jones, Ferdinand, Smalling, Evra, Scholes, Carrick, Valencia, Nani. Rooney, Welbeck.

Bench – De Gea, Evans, Rafael, Giggs, Park, Hernandez, Berbatov.

Arsenal’s key player – Robin Van Persie he is going to be key for Arsenal on Sunday, the Dutchman has been in excellent goal scoring form this season. Hopefully he can continue it on Sunday but will need the right service from the likes of Arshavin and Walcott.

Man Utd’s key player – I’ve gone for Antonio Valencia he’s likely to start for Man Utd on the right of midfield so he could be up against Ignasi Miquel. Being an Arsenal fan you just hope Vermaelen returns because you don’t want to see the young Spanish defender up against Valencia. The Ecuador international has been playing well for Man Utd recently, he’s an excellent crosser of the ball which is an advantage for Wayne Rooney and Danny Welback.

Prediction – Arsenal’s home form this season has been much better than there away form which should be an advantage for the Gunners. I’m going for a draw though with the number of players missing for Arsenal I can’t see them beating Man Utd but hopefully I’m wrong. 2-2 draw with Van Persie and Walcott scoring for Arsenal.
