Overdue Comeback and a Swansea Preview

by on January 14, 2012

So, first things first sorry to all readers for not blogging since 19th December but schools kept me busy with its unerring and consistent approach of dishing out homework like there’s no tomorrow, an inconvenience to say the least.

Anyway onto the Arsenal and there’s only one man’s name who’s on everyone’s lips, Thierry Henry. The King of Highbury returned last Monday with the Arsenal crest embroidered onto his chest. The skepticism amongst most football fans about whether he still had ‘it’ was ridiculed as soon as he stepped onto the Emirates turf. The goal was exceptional. His first touch was sublime, and that characteristic side-foot finish was something rarely seen since his departure. If that wasn’t nostalgic enough for you Gooners then I honestly cant say what will be. Even the goal celebration underlined his passion, heart and desire for the club, a substance which has clearly been instilled into the side this season.

We may not have the talent we’ve had in previous season, and the fact that we lie in 5th with the neutrals bewildered by Spurs fortuitous run so far this season testifies that. But the spirit in the team is something which probably hasn’t been seen since The Invincibles swept the nation. If we can add some extra attacking flair to our hard-working side then we will be a force to match. Even my English teacher (who spits at the mention of the word ‘Arsenal’, admits that we should finish 4th this season,) encouraging signs.

Anyway, as it is the Transfer Window I think it would be more than apt if I went over a couple of rumours which have come about over the past few days:

  • Matias Suarez: First of all there are conflicting reports over the players future and it is not clear whether the two clubs have agreed anything at all. Suarez himself denied the rumours stating I don’t know where the story has come from that I will be joining Arsenal this winter, but I can formally deny it.”My bosses are well aware of what I want and that is to stay at Anderlecht for now. I’m still learning and that’s another reason why I don’t want to leave.”

On the other end of the spectrum respected Argentine journalist  Javier Perez stated that Suarez has signed a pre-contract with Arsenal where he will join in the summer. Link to the article: http://pasiondemultitudes.weebly.com/1/post/2012/01/closed-matter.html The fee is rumoured to be around £5m pounds, and has not been announced due to the fact that ‘a few bits and pieces need to be ironed out.’

  • Aly Cissokho: The swashbuckling road runner wing back is known for his boundless energy and lightning pace, he was linked with a loan move to Arsenal, however this was rejected by Lyon. There were also rumours of Cissokho having a medical at Arsenal, however this has been denied by @samuelj29060. Shame.
  • Wayne Bridge: If this guy ends up joining Arsenal football club then you may find that I give up blogging and end up in a mental home. Now that wouldn’t be good. However I do think that this deal is quite likely considering that no one else wants a West Ham reject. I don’t think I’ve met one person who thinks he’s a good player. Despite this I can see why he’s fits the bill. He’s available for loan, English (this is important considering we only have room in our squad for home-grown players) and also the fact that he’s a left back. That’s right, left back on the golf course every single weekend at Man City. How long would it take him to get to full fitness? A while I imagine, his only appearance this season came in the Carling Cup.
  • Saad Al- Mukhaini: The Omani left back is on trial at Arsenal after he was recommended by Oman coach Paul Le Guen, who formerly managed Rangers and Lyon. The trial will last 2 days. I think it’s probably unlikely we’ll see him in an Arsenal shirt anytime soon with Gibbs due back in the next couple of weeks.

Arsenal travel to Swansea tomorrow in a game which we simply have to win. In fact every game seems like that but the fact of the matter is, if Tottenham win today and we lose tomorrow then they will have a 12 point lead on us. As optimistic as I am about our chances of finishing in the top four, it would be embarrassing for the players and the fans to see our arch rivals that far ahead of us.

Regarding tomorrow it is not known whether Per Mertesacker or Tomas Rosicky will make the squad tomorrow after being ill this week. I think most fans would agree with me in saying Mertesacker would be the bigger miss as it would mean Sebastian Squillaci, (who’s assist gave Fulham the three 3 points the other week) would come into the side.

Here’s my predicted line-up:

Szczesny

Djourou   Mertesacker     Koscielny       Miquel

                       Song                    Arteta

                                   Ramsey

Walcott               Van Persie                Arshavin

Subs: Fabianki, Squillaci, Chamberlain, Henry, Benayoun, Rosicky, Park

Main Man: Robin Van Persie

Considering our recent injury woes it’s not a bad side. Swansea have kept 9 clean sheets this season and conceded only 4 goals at home. A 0-1 win would be very welcome indeed. Despite this I think the side is capable of scoring a lot of goals on their day and if Arshavin plays like he did against Leeds then i can see him getting a goal. Ramsey and Theo are also both due a goal or two and I wouldn’t be surprised to see there names on the score sheet.

My Prediction: 0-2 Arsenal with RVP and Theo getting the goals.

Enjoy your Saturday and let’s hope for a big Gunners win tomorrow! COYG.
