Henry Sends Arsenal In To The Fourth Round Of The F.A Cup

by on January 9, 2012

Thierry Henry came off the bench to score the only goal of the game for Arsenal, which was enough for the Gunners to go through to the fourth round of the F.A Cup. They now face Aston Villa at the Emirates later this month in the next round.

Thomas Rosicky and Per Mertesacker missed out through illness and Dutch international Robin Van Persie was rested. Wojciech Szczęsny started in-goal for the Gunners tonight with a back four of Ignasi Miquel, Sebastien Squillaci, Laurent Koscielny and Francis Coquelin in front of him. Arsenal’s midfield trio was unchanged from the Fulham defeat which was Alex Song, Aaron Ramsey and Mikel Arteta, the Spaniard captain Arsenal tonight. Andrey Arshavin started on the left, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was on the right and Marouane Chamakh was the alone striker.

In the first-half Arsenal dominated possession but lacked that cutting edge in front of goal. A good Arsenal move fell to Arshavin but the Russian’s effort went high and wide.  The North London side closes chance came from Squillaci the French defender’s header just went of the Leeds goal. Arsenal’s stand in captain of the night Mikel Arteta tried his luck from distance and it went inches wide. But Arsenal didn’t look at their best in the first-half.

Francis Coquelin was forced to be substituted in the first-half due to a hamstring injury and Reserve player Nico Yennaris came on at right-back.

Arsenal came out much better in the second-half, straight away from the restart the Gunners were causing the Leeds defence problems just couldn’t find that early goal they needed. The Leeds goalkeeper Longergan made good saves to deny Arteta and England U-21 forward Oxlade-Chamberlain in the second-half.  Arshavin was working hard for the North London side just couldn’t find the goal he deserved.

Midway through the second-half Wenger made two changes taking off Oxlade-Chamberlain and Chamakh for Theo Walcott and Thierry Henry. Henry was making his second debut with the club after rejoining the Gunners on a short-term loan deal last week. A great pass from Song which found Henry’s run just inside the Leeds box and a typical Henry finish went past Longergan in the Leeds goal.

Leeds had a late chance through Ross McCormack but his header was straight at Szczesny from eight yards out and the Polish keeper made an easy save.

Thierry Henry’s goal was enough to put Arsenal in to the fourth round of the F.A Cup and they will now play Aston Villa in the next round of the cup later this month. But they now need to prepare for the game against Swansea on the weekend in the Premiership.
