by on January 3, 2012

Arsenal Reserves take on Sunderland Reserves tomorrow at London Colney, Neil Banfield’s side ended 2011 with a disappointing defeat to Chelsea. Now they will be looking to bounce back with a victory tomorrow and start the new year of well. The Reserves are currently in fourth place in the Reserve League South table and only three points behind league leaders Aston Villa.

Reserve team captain Ignasi Miquel is likely to miss out after being on first team duty being on the bench in Arsenal’s defeat to Fulham yesterday. Arsenal recalled goalkeeper James Shea last month and he could start for Neil Banfield’s side tomorrow. But despite Shea’s return Damián Martínez started in goal for the Reserves against Chelsea in their last game and Shea was on the bench.

A number of reserve players could be called up to Arsène Wenger’s first team for their match next Monday evening in the F.A Cup against Leeds United at the Emirates. With the likes of Robin Van Persie, Mikel Arteta and others are likely to be rested for the third round tie. So players will be wanting to impress Wenger tomorrow if he’s watching.

Highly rated Japanese forward Ryo Miyaichi has returned to full training after being out since November with a sprained his left ankle. Which means Ryo is available to play for Neil Banfield’s side tomorrow if he’s picked but it’s been reported he could go out on loan this month.  Gavin Hoyte is likely to return for the Reserves tomorrow after missing the last several games through injury.

Reserve striker Benik Afobe has returned to training after being out since August through injury and Conor Henderson has started running again after damaging his cruciate ligaments in pre-season whilst playing for the first-team. Chuks Aneke and Luke Freeman are still on loan at League One side Stevenage, Sanchez Watt is also on loan at Sheffield Wednesday still.

Tomorrow’s match could see the return of former Arsenal reserve player Roarie Deacon who is currently playing for Sunderland after being released by the Gunners last summer. Sunderland Reserves biggest goal-scoring threat will come from Ryan Noble who has scored elven goals for there Reserves this season.
