Van Persie Goal Gets Arsenal All Three Points

by on December 31, 2011

A second-half Robin Van Persie strike was enough for Arsenal to defeat Queens Park Rangers today at the Emirates, the victory moves the Gunners up to fourth place in the Premiership. Arsène Wenger made three changes to the side which drew against Wolves last week Andrey Arshavin, Aaron Ramsey and Theo Walcott came in for Tomáš Rosický, Yossi Benayoun and Gervinho.

Wojciech Szczęsny was forced to make a good save to deny Shaun Wright-Phillips early on after the QPR midfielder got on the end of Adel Taarabt’s through ball which opened Arsenal’s defence up. Arsenal’s first chance came from their Dutch forward, Van Persie worked his way in to QPR’s box after twisting and turning a defender. This created space for Van Persie to shot from a tight angle and it was easily saved by Radek Černý.

Wales captain Aaron Ramsey produced a great delivery in to the QPR box and Van Persie found Ramsey’s cross but the Dutchman’s header just went pasted the post. It was great movement from Van Persie to get to the end of the Welshman’s cross. Excellent play from Johan Djourou who worked his way just outside QPR’s box and found Van Persie. And the Dutchman took a touch and then tricked his way to make room for the shot but the Dutchman opted a chip-shot which went wide of the goal.

Belgium defender Thomas Vermaelen played a long ball in to QPR’s half and Van Persie got on the end of the pass. The Arsenal forward opted to shoot on the half-volley and it went high and wide. From an Arsenal corner saw the ball fall to Laurent Koscielny on the edge of the QPR box and controlled well, the Frenchman’s effort was blocked by Luke Young. Arsenal thought it hit Young’s hand when he blocked Koscielny’s effort, the pentalty wasn’t given.

Both sides went in at half-time level, ten minutes in to the second-half Aaron Ramsey played a lovely through ball to Theo Walcott who was onside. The England international was one on one with Černý, he had time but put his shot wide of the QPR goal. Walcott should have at least got it on target, you would have expected him to score. Vermaelen limped off early in the second-half which meant Francis Coquelin came on, in an unfamiliar position at left-back for the Gunners.

On the 60th minute Shaun Wright-Phillips misplaced pass fell to Andrey Arshavin and the Russian played in Van Persie who wasn’t going to miss. The Dutchman finished well to put Arsenal in to the lead. Szczęsny made a good save to stop Taarabt’s effort, the Moroccan tried his luck from distance but couldn’t beat the Poland international.

Wenger took off Arshavin and Walcott and replaced the duo with Rosický and Gervinho. Shortly after coming on Gervinho should of doubled Arsenal’s lead after Alex Song found Van Persie in QPR’s box and the Dutchman done well and played in Gervinho. But the Arsenal forward put his effort around the wrong side of the post.

A Robin Van Persie goal was enough for the Gunners to get the three points today they next play against Fulham on Monday away in the Premiership.
