Thoughts on Striker Options, Henry and Podolski?

by on December 29, 2011

Arsenal Targets - Thierry Henry (Left) & Łukasz Podolski (Right)

Next month Gervinho and Marouane Chamakh are both going to the African Cup of Nations in January with their country’s which means Arsenal will be short of forwards next month. Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger is likely to be in the market for a striker in the January transfer window. A number of reports are claiming Arsenal will offer former Arsenal captain Thierry Henry a two month loan deal. Henry is currently training with Arsenal at London Colney because the MLS season is over at the moment and the former Arsenal striker is playing for New York Red Bulls. The reports are also saying German international Łukasz Podolski is one of Arsène Wenger’s top targets for next month’s transfer window.

Robin Van Persie is the Gunners talisman, the Dutch forward has been in incredible goal scoring form this season. At the moment Arsenal can’t afford to rest the striker because the lack of back-up quality for the Arsenal captain. Marouane Chamakh has been Arsenal’s second choice striker this season, spending most of the season on the Arsenal’s substitute bench. The Moroccan international has only scored twice for the Gunners in 2011, he started his Arsenal career of very well but his form took a massive dip in the second-half of last season.  Chamakh has spoken about his Arsenal future a number of times already this season, ruling out leaving the Emirates in January but is more than likely to leave in the summer for first-team football.

Arsenal signed South Korean captain Park Chu-Young in the summer from French side Monaco. The striker has found his chances limited so far this season, Park has only made four appearances for Arsenal in the first-half of this season. He hasn’t played a minute of Premiership football yet, only featuring for Arsenal in the Champions League and Carling Cup so far this season. Even though the Arsenal fans have only seen glimpses of Park this season he showed his quality in the Carling Cup against Bolton earlier this season scoring an excellent goal. Arsène Wenger recently said this (below) about Park Chy-Young and saying his adaptation period in England is over.

“The adaptation period for him is over now so he has to come in and show he has the quality to play for us,”

Me and many other Arsenal fans want to know why Park Chu-Young hasn’t even been on the bench recently for Arsenal? When you see Chamakh on the bench instead who is out form and out of confidence in front of goal you wonder why hasn’t Park had a chance yet? One thing is for sure Park will definitely get a chance next month for the Gunners.

Some thoughts about Thierry Henry and if he comes back to Arsenal next month on loan. Henry is one of the greatest players to have ever played for Arsenal in there whole entire history of the football club. Whilst Henry was at Arsenal from 1999 to 2007 he done magical things on the pitch, scored unbelievable goals etc. Henry isn’t the same player he once was which is obvious because he’s much more older, 34’s years old now.

I wouldn’t be against Arsenal signing Henry on loan next month, I doubt many fans are.  In the past former players like Sol Campbell and Jens Lehmann have returned to Arsenal on short-term deals. Campbell done very well when he came back to Arsenal I thought, Lehmann only made one appearance for Arsenal in his second time at the club. Henry still has quality and would be a good option to have on the bench. He’s still capable of scoring goals, he scored 15 times in 29 games for New York Red Bulls last season.

But if Arsène Wenger only signs Thierry Henry next month I don’t think it’s enough we need another forward as well. If we signed a striker who is capable of playing out wide as well. Who would be able to give Gervinho and Theo Walcott competition as well would be ideal. Arsenal have got money to spend next month but in January it can be hard to find the right players to sign. As well I think Wenger will be trying to sign players who will be able to play in the Champions League and aren’t cup-tied in the competition.

One name which has been mentioned is FC Köln striker Łukasz Podolski, the German international has been reportedly scouted by Arsenal a number of times this season. Podolski can play as the alone striker and can operate on the wing as well. The German forward has been in great goal scoring form this season scoring 14 goals in 16 games this season in Bundesliga for FC Köln.

A few people say the last time Podolski was at a big club which was Bayern Munich he never found his best form. He was younger when he joined Munich and since then he has matured a lot. Germany manager Joachim Löw said this about the striker last month.

“For four or five years I have said that it would be better for Lukas to stay in Germany”

“Today the situation is different, Lukas has become more mature, he is more capable of making the move abroad.”

Löw has been the Germany manager since 2006 and knows Podolski very well. Podolski’s record for the German national team is 43 goals in 95 games which is a great record and it’s hard to forget Podolski is only 26 years old. A very experience player, with an excellent left foot and scores all types of goals. He’s even said if he leaves FC Köln this season it’s likely he will move aboard.

“If I leave Köln, I’d be tempted to go abroad. It’s hard to imagine moving within the league.”

I think the ideal situation next month will be Arsenal signing both Thierry Henry on loan and Łukasz Podolski. Henry on his own isn’t enough for the Gunners they need to sign another forward as well and Podolski is the perfect option. With it being reported Marouane Chamakh and Andrey Arshavin are both likely to leave Arsenal in the summer as well.

    Exactly my opinion.
There is no negative in signing Henry,as long as its not at the expense of a long term signing.
