Hennessey Deny’s Arsenal The Win

by on December 27, 2011

Arsène Wenger made four chances to the side which defeated Aston Villa last week. Alex Song returned from suspension which meant Emmanuel Frimpong dropped out. Francis Coquelin dropped to the bench because Johan Djourou returned at right-back. Theo Walcott missed out through illness which meant Benayoun started the game. And Aaron Ramsey dropped to the bench which saw Rosický come in for the Welshman in the midfield trio.

Early moments of the game saw Wolves winger Matt Jarvis creating space and his effort was well blocked by Mertesacker. Good work from Rosický who found Benayoun and Israel international ran in the Wolves half. The midfielder played a great ball which opened up the Wolves defence and found Gervinho’s run. The forward finished well to put Arsenal in to the lead.

Benayoun played in Vermaelen this time who was overlapping at left-back but the Belgium’s effort was blocked by Roger Johnson. Seconds later Gervinho found Van Persie but the Dutchman’s effort was well wide of the Wolves goal. Van Persie fired a low shot which was saved by Hennessey. Roger Johnson brought down Van Persie just on the edge of the Wolves box and got a yellow card. Spanish midfielder Mikel Arteta took the resulting free-kick but it was a weak effort and saved by Hennessey.

Against the run of play Wolves had scored an equalizer Steven Fletcher’s header sneaked past Wojciech Szczęsny in the Arsenal goal. Late on in the first-half Rosický tried his luck from distance but it was straight at Hennessey.  Both sides went in at the break level.

Arsenal wanted a penalty early in the second-half after they thought Christophe Berra blocked a cross with his arm. Thomas Vermaelen got booked after complaining to the officials about the decision.  Wenger made Arsenal’s first change of the match taking off Benayoun for Andrey Arshavin. Hennessey made a great save to deny Van Persie’s free-kick and in the resulting corner Hennessey made another good stop this time from Mertesacker’s header.

Alex Song picked up a yellow card as well and moments later was substituted for Aaron Ramsey. Rosický blasted just wide of the Wolves goal after Ramsey done well to set the midfielder up. Nenad Milijas went in hard on Mikel Arteta just outside the Wolves area and got sent his marching orders, Wolves were down to ten men.

Robin van Persie controlled well but his effort was blocked by a Wolves defender. Arshavin went even closer when his effort went inches over the Wolves crossbar. Hennessey made another great save to deny Van Persie’s free-kick and then saved the Dutchman’s effort from a tight angle. Arsenal made their third substitution which saw Johan Djoruou going off for Chamakh.

A good run by Koscielny but his cross was blocked by Hennessey. A collision between Van Persie and Chamakh saw them both go for for treatment and Hennessey made another great save to stop Vermaelen from scoring. Arsenal’s last chance came from an Aaron Ramsey’s cross and Van Persie’s header went well wide.

Arsenal couldn’t find a way past the brilliant Wayne Hennessey in the second-half, the match finished 1-1. Man of the match has to go to Hennessey he was incredible in the Wolves goal today denied Arsenal on a number of occasions. Arsenal next play against Queens Park Rangers on Saturday at the Emirates.
