Could Arshavin Be Leaving The Emirates?

by on December 20, 2011

A number of reports are suggesting Arsenal are ready to sell Russia captain Andrey Arshavin. Both the Daily Mail and Mirror are reporting the stories that Arshavin could leave the Emirates in January.  The Russian forward has found his chances limited this season because of summer signing Gervinho which has meant Arshavin has been on the bench for the majority of the season. Recently in games Arsène Wenger has brought Arshavin on in the second-half, in games where they need a goal and his performances have been frustrating.

When Arshavin first joined Arsenal he was asked to play on the wing somewhere he had never played before. His preferred position has always been in the number ten role just behind the striker for his National side and former club Zenit St Petersburg. Arshavin did get the opportunity to play in that position against Bolton in the Carling Cup earlier this season where he scored and assisted Park Chu-Young goal in the match.

Arshavin is thirty years old now and with the Euros coming up in the summer he will be wanting to play regularly. There has been some talk of the likes of Zenit St Petersburg and Anzhi Makhachkala interested in signing the Russian international. With Gervinho going to the African Cup of Nations in January it will mean an opportunity for his spot will come available. Could Arshavin get back to his best and work his way back in to the Arsenal team? With the likes of Yossi Benayoun and Tomáš Rosický also on the bench recently they will be wanting to work there way in to Arsène Wenger starting elven. Another player who could replace Gervinho whilst he goes to the African Cup of Nations is highly rated Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who has impressed in his first season at the Emirates.

Arsenal still need a striker we all see can that, even Wenger himself has said they will be short of strikers in January because of Gervinho and Chamakh going to the African Cup of Nations in mid January until February. But if Arshavin does leave Arsenal in January then they surly have to replace him? It’s no point in saying names like Mario Götze or Eden Hazard for January because they are unrealistic targets. Maybe Wenger could be looking at a striker who is capable of playing out wide as well, someone like Łukasz Podolsk.
