Arsenal defeated at the Etihad Stadium

by on December 18, 2011

A second-half goal from Spanish midfielder David Silva was enough for league leaders Manchester City to defeat Arsenal a the Etihad Stadium. Arsène Wenger named an unchanged side to the team which defeated Everton last weekend. Former Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri started for Man City but Gaël Clichy missed out through suspension. This meant Pablo Zabaleta started at left-back for the league leaders with England defender Micah Richards returning at right-back.

Agentina international Sergio Agüero had the first real chance of the game when Zabaleta played a great ball in to the Arsenal box and Agüero got past a couple of Arsenal defenders but blasted his effort over the bar. Arsenal’s first shot of the game came from Gervinho, Alex Song played in the Arsenal forward and Joe Hart made a good save from Gervinho’s effort at his near post.

Poland number one Wojciech Szczęsny made a great stop to deny Mario Balotelli from opening the scoring. The chance came from Richards cross on the right-hand side which wasn’t cleared by the Arsenal defence and the ball fell to Balotelli. The Italian striker’s effort was wonderfully saved by the Polish keeper.

Arsenal captain Robin Van Persie made space to strike the ball just outside the Man City box but Richards slid in to deflect the Dutch forward’s effort. Which fell to Ramsey inside the City box and the Welshman was just about to shot but former Arsenal defender Kolo Toure made a last-ditch tackle to deny Ramsey. Later on in the first-half Szczęsny made another good stop when Agüero’s shot was straight at him.

Johan Djrouou was forced off through injury early in the second-half which meant Ignasi Miquel came on for the Gunners.

Good work from Balotelli who got past Song to create space to have a shot which Szczęsny saved but couldn’t keep hold of it. The rebound was headed by Agüero and it fell to David Silva, the midfielder couldn’t miss from a couple of yards out and put Man City in to the lead.

Arsenal thought they had scored but Van Persie’s goal was ruled out because the Dutchman was offside. On the 65th minute Zabaleta tried his luck from distance and hit Arsenal’s post nearly double Man City’s lead. Arsenal were lucky not to be awarded a penalty after the ball hit Richards arm in the Man City box. Arshavin and Chamakh both came on for the North London side in the second-half.

Late in the game Vermaelen had two chances for the Gunners one was a free-kick which the Belgium’s effort was well saved by Hart. And his second was in the dying seconds of the game when Vermaelen’s curled effort from outside the box just went wide of the Man City goal.

Frustrating result for Arsenal, I thought they deserved a point but there final passes/balls let them down in the match. Alex Song will miss the next game through suspension after getting five yellow cards this season.

Arsenal next play against Aston Villa on Wednesday.
