Van Persie On This Season, How Arsenal Bounced Back & More

by on December 16, 2011

Arsenal captain Robin Van Persie was interviewed by Arsenal Player. The Dutchman spoke about a number of things which included Arsenal’s bad start to the season, what there expectations are as a team and much more. The Dutch striker has been in fantastic goal scoring form this season and being one of the main reasons for Arsenal’s turn around in the last couple of months. When Cesc Fàbregas left Arsenal in the summer to join his former club Barcelona it meant Van Persie was given the Arsenal captaincy. Van Persie has shown he is a leader on the pitch and shown he was the right choice for the captains armband at the start of the season.

Van Persie spoke about how it’s only 15 games in to the season and there’s many more games to be played. Also how the Premiership is an open league and surprises can always happen.

“We should have higher expectations every week, but for now because we have only played 15 games in the league we are not even halfway,”

“I don’t think it’s clever to be excited by fourth, fifth, sixth or whatever. This is not now, we still have to play many games.”

“So many things can happen – you see that Spurs lost three points last week, Chelsea beat Man City. It’s an open league and anything can happen. Lots of stuff will happen that is surprising so we have to make sure that we are on the good side and actually surprise people with our results.”

The Arsenal captain said how the departures of Samir Nasri and Cesc Fàbregas in the summer affected the team.

“We had a tough start in the first couple of weeks, it wasn’t an easy summer with Cesc and Samir [leaving],”

“It was always hard because nobody really knew what the team would be for the season. We made a couple of late signings that we had to make, because we were losing a couple of world-class players.

And how Arsenal bounced back after that disappointing defeat to Manchester United earlier this season.

“After that game against Manchester United, we did come back strong. Everybody had written us off to come back from something like that and weren’t speaking positively about us.”

“To bounce back from a period like that you can say that everybody earns some credit because we had to dig deep, trust me.”
