Mertesacker Speaks About His Form, Differences Between England & Germany

by on December 14, 2011

Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker spoke to the Arsenal website about joining the North London Club quickly near deadline day in August. The German international said he didn’t have much time to settle in at his club, going straight in to the starting line-up.

Mertesacker on joining Arsenal near deadline day and not having much time to settle.

“I’m feeling good and I think that’s the best thing,”

“It was quite a short time for me to settle in and make the transfer happen – it was very close to the deadline so it was a tough month for me.

The former Werder Bremen defender spoke about the differences between the Premiership and Bundesliga.

“I think in England the best players in the world are here.

They have a lot of strength, a lot of speed, it doesn’t compare to the Bundesliga. The technical [ability] is similar but the speed and the physical power is different.

Mertesacker also went on to say not having a pre-season with his new club made it harder for him and the new signings needed time to get used to Arsenal and their new team-mates. He also went on to say the more games he plays for Arsenal the better he will become.

“If you have no pre-season with the team then that makes it more difficult. People think it’s easy to connect with your club, your team-mates, but it takes time.

“It’s getting better and better and hopefully I can keep improving now. Let me play a season and you can get [the full picture] of my personality and my ability as a footballer.”

Arsenal have been criticised in the past about dealing with set-pieces but in the last couple of months they’ve improved dealing with them. Mertesacker spoke about set-pieces and how it’s important to deal with them probably.

“Set-pieces are very dangerous in the modern game,”

“They can make the difference in the game and therefore you have to defend your goal the best way you can, and that’s my way. You have to be patient.

“You are always looking for the ball, that is the main thing for me. You want to win it and that’s the main reason [for my record].”

Over the last couple of months Arsenal’s defence have improved and are solid at the back now. Injuries to Bacary Sagna, Carl Jenkinson, Andre Santos and Kieran Gibbs haven’t help because it has forced Johan Djourou and Thomas Vermaelen to play as fullbacks in recent games. People do forget Mertesacker didn’t have a pre-season with Arsenal and joined near the end of the transfer window. This meant Mertesacker went straight in to the Arsenal starting team and there is a big difference between the Premiership and Bundesliga.

Mertesacker needed time to get used to English football a player with 79 caps for Germany isn’t going to be a bad player. Over the last couple of months the German defender has become more consistent for the gunners, there has been the odd mistake which you expect.
