We’re off to Nigeria, Podolski quotes, Aneke gets praised, Arteta speaks, more ‘Arsenalisation’ and a million other things

by on December 13, 2011

Hello all, it’s been a while hasn’t it! I know I haven’t been around much lately, but there’s been a lot going on behind the scenes [more on that later]. Luckily, Brendan has been working at a mile a minute so I’m sure you haven’t missed me that badly.

First things first, we’re saying goodbye [permanently I think] to Nick. He has a lot on his plate in real life at the moment, so unfortunately there won’t be any more of those lovely Monday morning rants. Luckily, he’s been replaced! James Cook will be doing a column-esque thing every Monday [not as ranty as Nick’s] and he’s already started! How eager is he? He’s spoken in his first post about the Everton match and the club’s birthday celebrations, so I won’t go into too much detail about those myself. What I will say though is that I like these pieces on the Arsenal website. I often say that ours is the classiest club around [although that’s not hard in England]. Have a look at these quotes from fans and players about what Arsenal means to them.

I’m told that, in a casual meeting with AST members recently, Ivan Gazidis suggested that there could be more statues at the Emirates. There are also suggestions that the club could give in to pressure from fan groups like the Black Scarf Movement [yucky] and get the Clock End back in the hands of Arsenal season ticket holders. I’ve always been a North Bank man myself, but it’s nice to here. The Clock End is a special place.

I said James spoke about our win over Everton. He’s not the only one to do so. As always there are good pieces from Arsenal Column and Arsenal Report for the more tactically inclined reader, while Goodplaya suggests that we were for once reliant on Robin Van Persie. It’s fair to say the Dutchman didn’t have his best game, but when you pull a goal like that out of the hat, you’re usually excused. Saying that he’s played the super strike down,  although Theo Walcott was quick enough to praise the goal. For that goal and the rest of the highlights, click here. There are usually a few extra interviews here as well.

Other news then and there’s been quite a bit of it. There’s still rumours rumbling around about who we could be in for in January. Arsene Wenger pretty much ruled out a midfielder when he was recently asked about Yoann Gourcuff. It’s not a secret that we’re lacking a real credible threat in attack at the moment apart from Robin Van Persie, so that’s where most of the rumours have been surfacing. Karim Benzema has once again been linked with the club, as has Salomon Kalou. The big player we’re reportedly in for though is Lukas Podolski as I’m sure you’ve all seen already. The German isn’t saying anything to quell the rumours either. Saying that, it could well be that we chase a versatile defender this summer, after it was announced that Andre Santos is set to have surgery. Although we still have Kieran Gibbs, Bacary Sagna, Carl Jenkinson and Thomas Vermaelen who can all fill in at left-back, that would obviously leave us short in other positions. Whether we go for a defender or not remains to be soon.

In other news, Mikel Arteta has impressed a lot of people since moving here in the summer and he’s spoken recently about what he hopes to achieve at the club, helping out Robin Van Persie and scoring for himself. There have also been reports in the last few days that officials from Arsenal are in Nigeria to explore the possibility of a pre-season tour there. With no Emirates Cup next summer due to the Olympics, it looks like this idea could have legs with Arsenal enjoying a strong following in Nigeria.

Youth wise, there’s the usual loanee round up. Chuks Aneke in particular has been drawing praise. It’s almost that time of year again where more of the Reserves go out on loan and Jeorge Bird has had a look at what that might mean for our Academy and Reserve sides.

Finally before I go, an interesting piece on Andrei Arshavin by Desi Gooner. Really worth a read. That’s about it from me though. As always you can follow me on twitter @SavageGooner and ‘like’ the blog on facebook. [On an extra note, I usually have some of the stats up from matches on twitter. They’re usually worth checking out, check my timeline for more details].
