Mertesacker Praises Arteta And His Role In Arsenal’s Midfield

by on December 9, 2011

German international Per Mertesacker praised his Arsenal team-mate Mikel Arteta, by saying having the Spanish midfielder at the Emirates as “it is unbelievable to have him in the squad”. Mertesacker also said having consistency will be very vital to Arsenal’s season this month, with the gunners facing Everton on Saturday and league leaders Manchester City in a couple of weeks at the Etihad Staidum.

Mertesacker said this about Arteta to the Arsenal website

on Mikel Arteta
I noticed him in the first match we played against Everton [with Werder Bremen]. He is so experienced, it is unbelievable to have him in the squad. He gives a lot of advice to the young players, and to me as well. He is very important for the squad. He has done well in the last few games and hopefully he can do that in the future too. I think he can.

on Arteta’s discipline in midfield
It’s important that the whole team is defending, like we have done in the last few months. I think that’s the best way to have a compact defence, that’s the first thing for success.

Many people don’t notice Arteta’s role in the Arsenal midfield, I thought he was our best player last week against Wigan Athletic. Just think Jack Wilshere should be back next month and just think what he will add to the current Arsenal midfield. I agree completely what Mertesacker said about the former Everton player. Arteta adds Premiership experience what the Arsenal midfield lacked after the summer departures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri. And the Spanish midfielder adds stability to the midfield as well.
