Serge Gnabry Impressive Start To His Arsenal Career

by on December 4, 2011

Germany U-17’s midfielder Serge Gnabry joined Arsenal in the summer from VfB Stuttgart, only officially joining in July and since then he has shown his talent and massive potential he has. He made an instant impact in pre-season scoring for Arsenal U-18’s against a Sunderland XI side. Then a couple of days later he found himself on the bench for an Arsenal XI side in a pre-season friendly against Boreham Wood. Coming on at half-time and it only took him twenty-five minutes to score.

Gnabry along with other summer recruits couldn’t make their debuts for Steve Bould’s side in the FA Premier Academy League due to paper work issues with Uefa. So Gnarby missed the first five U-18’s games in the FA Premier Academy League this season. He was finally allowed to make his debut for Arsenal against Crystal Palace U-18’s in September. Scoring a brilliant goal from distance to open the scoring in the match which ended in a 2-2 draw.

Then two weeks later Gnabry got his second for Steve Bould’s side in the 3-0 victory over Chelsea U-18’s, scoring the opening goal. The young Arsenal midfielder started for U-18’s at the Emirates stadium in a friendly against Chelsea U-18’s. Gnabry scored a late winner against Charlton Athletic U-18’s which was his third goal of the season for Steve Bould’s side.

He came off the bench against Portsmouth U-18s and scored the final goal of the game in the 6-3 victory over the South Coast side. Because of Gnabry impressive start to his Arsenal career for the U-18’s he got handed his first Reserve team debut in the defeat to Aston Villa. He started for Neil Banfield’s side and was arguably the stand out player for the Reserves on the night.

I expect the sixteen year old to be a regular for Neil Banfield’s side later the season goes on. Mainly operating on the left hand side in the front three for the U-18’s and Reserves so far this season. He can play centrally which would likely to be in the number ten role.

With great technical ability, quick, able to score goals from midfield, good passer of the ball and can take players he seems to have a bit of everything. It’s still only early days in his Arsenal career but at the moment it looks Gnabry is definitely one for the future. Because the current Arsenal U-18’s is very big in numbers I think Gnabry will continue to operate from the left.

Last week the German youth international made his Reserve debut and he didn’t look out-of-place at all. Despite the result of the match Gnabry did impress and dealt with the physical level of it very well. Causing the Aston Villa defence a few problems and coming close to scoring as well. With more players from Neil Banfield’s side likely to be going out on loan in January it could open the door up for Gnabry to have more opportunities at Reserve level.

Over the last couple of years we’ve seen Germany produce many young talented players the likes of Mario Götze, Marco Reus and many more. Could Serge Gnabry be one of the next ones to come through in the years to come? At the moment the young Arsenal midfielder is playing for Germany U-17’s.

With players like Gnabry, Olsson, Bunjaku and Toral in the U-18’s at the moment the future looks very bright for Arsenal.
