Arsenal Go To The DW Stadium Looking For Three Points

by on December 2, 2011

Arsenal take on struggling Wigan Athletic on Saturday in the Premiership at the DW Stadium. Despite losing to Manchester City on Tuesday in the Carling Cup, the gunners find themselves in good form in the league they are currently six games unbeaten. Arsène Wenger decided to field a mix team of youth and experience against Manchester City in midweek. With players who needed game time started the match e.g. Chamakh, Chu-Young and Benayoun. This meant the likes of Van Persie, Walcott, Song etc were rested and should be raring to go on Saturday.

Their can be no room for complacency against Wigan, in previous seasons in this fixture have seen Arsenal drop points. In the 2009/10 season Arsenal had a two goal lead and eventually lost the match 3-2. Then last season Arsenal went behind after a Ben Watson penalty, goals from Arshavin and Bendtner late in the first-half gave Arsenal a half-time lead. But nine minutes to go Squillaci scored an own goal and the match ended in a draw.

Arsenal will be without midfielders Thomas Rosicky and Abou Diaby due to injury. Sagna, Jenkinson, Gibbs and Wilshere are still sidelined for the North London side. Wigan captain  Antolin Alcaraz is still suspended and will miss the match tomorrow.

Arsenal take on Olympiakos in the Champions League next week but their already through so Arsène Wenger is expected name a similar side which played Manchester City last week in the Carling Cup.

Wigan are currently second to bottom in the Premiership but they did defeat Sunderland in their last match winning 2-1, a late Di Santo strike was enough for a Wigan victory. Wigan forwards Rodallega and Di Santos will be pushing for starts.

Possible Wigan team – Al Habasi, Gohouri, Caldwell, Stam, Figueroa, McCarthy, Diame, Waston, Gomez, Di Santos, Rodallega

Possible Arsenal team – Szczesny, Santos, Vermaelen, Mertersacker, Koscielny, Song, Arteta, Gervinho, Walcott, Van Persie

Arsenal’s Key Man – None other than Robin Van Persie, the Dutchman is currently in great goal scoring form this season and is in the form of his life. Wigan are a team which leak goals and you would expect the Arsenal captain to score against them.

Wigan’s Key Man – I’ve gone for Rodallega you never know what type of Rodallega is going to turn up for Wigan but he can score goals and cause defenders problems. Arsenal will need to keep him quiet throughout the match as he will be Wigan’s main threat.

Prediction – I’ve gone with an Arsenal away win think they will have too much on the day and Wigan won’t be able to stop them. I could see Arsenal scoring three or four if I’m being honest with the likes Van Persie and Walcott scoring. Hopefully Arsenal will be tight at the back and keep a clean sheet.
