Arsenal Vs Borussia Dortmund – Match Preview

by on November 22, 2011

After defeating Norwich on Saturday, Arsenal now prepare to take on German champions Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday in the Champions League at The Emirates. When the two sides faced each other earlier on this season at BVB Stadion, Arsenal were denied a victory after late stunning strike from Croatian international Ivan Perišić. The North London side took the lead through Van Persie just before half-time when they last met. Arsenal are currently top of Group F after four games played on eight points. With Marseille in second place only one point behind Arsenal, German side Borussia Dortmund in third place on four points and Olympiacos bottom of the group.

Dortmund faced Bayern Munich in Bundesliga on Saturday with highly rated German international Mario Götze scoring the only goal of the game for Dortmund. With many reports claiming Götze is number one on Arsenal’s target transfer list and head Arsenal scout Steve Rowley has watched the German international a number of times already this season. The Daily Mail claimed Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis and Richard Law will try to speak with Dortmund officials at the match about trying to sign Gotze. My opinion Mario Götze is going to become a world-class player in the years to come and even at the moment he’s undeniably one of the best players in his position in Europe.

It’s going to be an interesting match to watch because Arsenal are in good form going up towards this match and Dortmund are as well by beating Munich on the weekend. Some have suggested the Munich match might have taken a lot out of Borussia Dortmund on the weekend but I doubt it has. Both sides play similar formations 4-2-3-1 which can turn to 4-3-3 if they want to. We all know the style Arsenal play under Arsène Wenger, his philosophy of attacking free-flowing football. Jürgen Klopp’s side press the opposition very well normally it comes from the midfield.

At the moment Arsenal are missing England international Jack Wilshere who is expected to return to light training soon. Abou Diaby has recently returned to full training and could feature for the Reserves on Tuesday evening. Arsenal full-back Bacary Sagna had surgery on a fractured fibula in his right ankle early in October and is expected to return with two months. Japanese teenager Ryo Miyaichi has an ankle sprain and will be out of action for a few weeks. Arsenal are missing full-backs at the moment with Carl Jenkinson being out with a stress fracture and Kieran Gibbs had surgery last week and will be out six weeks.

German defender Neven Subotić will miss the game after having facial surgery two weeks ago which ruled the Dortmund center back out for six weeks.

Arsenal possible team – Szczęsny, Santos, Vermaelen, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Song, Arteta, Ramsey, Gervinho, Walcott, Van Persie (C)

Possible bench – Fabiański, Djourou, Coquelin/Frimpong, Rosický, Arshavin, Benayoun , Park/Chamakh

Borussia Dortmund possible team – Weidenfeller, Piszczek, Santana, Hummels, Schmelzer, Bender, Kehl (C), Götze, Kagawa, Großkreutz – Lewandowski

Your able to predict the likely line up for the gunners, only question is will Arsène Wenger keep the same four back which started against Norwich. German international Per Mertersacker was largely at fault for Steve Morison’s goal for Norwich on Saturday. But Mertersacker will be eager to prove a point on Wednesday coming up against Borussia Dortmund with Germany’s national coach Joachim Löw likely to be watching. Wenger could be tempted to start Koscielny at right-back again.

England forward Theo Walcott recently said ” We (Arsenal) are playing beautiful football at this moment in time”. If they can continue to play this beautiful football like Walcott described tomorrow then Arsenal fan’s will be much more confident of a victory.

Dortmund center back Mats Hummels impressed when the two sides previously played earlier this season. Expect Dortmund captain Sebastian Kehl to be very disciplined trying to break up Arsenal’s attacking football. Japanse midfielder Shinji Kagawa is likely to start behind Lewandowski supporting Polish striker throughout the match. This will mean Götze is likely to start the match on the right up against Brazilian full-back Andre Santos. With Großkreutz starting on the left and could be up against Koscielny at right-back.

Some interesting battles could be Vermaelen against Lewandowski, the Belgium defender was very impressive against Norwich leading from the back. If Götze does start on the right for Dortmund then he will be up against attacking full-back Andre Santos, who has had some criticism about his defensive qualities since joining the North London side. But I think Santos defensive side is improving each games he plays becoming more consistent . How will he deal with the German wonder-kid? But could possibility of Santos going forward make Götze have more work to do helping out the right-back?

It’s very hard to describe Robin Van Persie’s performances this season, he’s unplayable at times and arguably one of the best strikers in Europe at the moment. He will be up against German center-back Hummels tomorrow and it should be an interesting battle. Theo Walcott put in another good performance on Saturday and he will be up against Schmelzer.

Arsenal’s Key Player – Robin Van Persie he’s in brilliant form scoring two more goals on the weekend in the victory against Norwich. The Dutchman scored against Dortmund in the reverse fixture earlier this season. With Walcott and Gervinho being able to supply Van Persie with the right service on the night will be very important. Aaron Ramsey’s likely to play in the more advanced role out of the midfield trio and will have to support Van Persie forward as much as possible like he did against Chelsea.

Borussia Dortmund’s Key Player – I chose Mario Götze who’s already scored six goals and has seven assists in seventeen matches this season for the German side this season. He’s likely to start the match on the right hand side being able to drift in centrally or even operating from the left as well. His creativity could be key for Dortmund but there are other players who could cause the gunners problems Kagawa and Großkreutz as well.

Of course I’m hoping for an Arsenal win, it’s going to be a tough game. I’m predicting a 2-1 victory for Arsenal with Van Persie and Gervinho scoring for the North London side. If the gunners win then they are through to the next round which is the last sixteen of the Champions League. Arsène Wenger will be hoping to top the group because they will avoid the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid etc if they achieve top spot.
