Arsenal Through To Quarter Finals, Yennaris & Boateng Makes Debuts

by on October 26, 2011

Arsène Wenger continued his philosophy last night against Bolton Wanderers in the Carling Cup fourth round by giving a debut to England U-19’s Nico Yennaris at right back. The Arsenal squad was a mixture of youth and experience up against a different looking Bolton side to what it’s been recently in the league.

Łukasz Fabiański, Sébastien Squillaci, Thomas Vermaelen, Yossi Benayoun and Andrei Arshavin all started for the North London side. Servral of the younger players who started were Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Emmanuel Frimpong, Francis Coquelin etc. The majority of Arsenal bench was reserve players who were eager to feature at some point in the game last night.

Former Arsenal player Fabrice Muamba scored the opening goal at The Emirates last night by intercepting Coquelin pass to Frimpong and combined with Darren Pratley before thrashing it past Fabiański in the Arsenal goal. Arsenal responded six minutes later after good work from Benayoun and Arshavin, which the Russian worked his way in to the box scoring from a tight angle. The Russia captain was having a rare chance to play in his preferred position which is centrally behind the striker  (Number 10 role).

It didn’t take Arsenal long to score their second of the match with Park scoring his first goal for the club and it was a brilliant finish. The goal was down to Arshavin creativity he had to wait for Park to get back onside before playing the pass to South Korean captain. Teenagers Ryo Miyaichi and Oğuzhan Özyakup both came on in the second half, in place of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Emmanuel Frimpong.

Nico Yennaris wasn’t the only player to make his Arsenal debut last night, reserve defender Daniel Boateng came on for the Arsenal captain on the night Thomas Vermaelen for the final six minutes.

Eighteen year old Nico Yennaris played at right back was the gunners even though his best position is in midfield, as the holding midfielder. But it didn’t matter where Yennaris was playing he was comfortable in possession, solid through out the match and kept Tuncay reasonable quiet. Watching the match last night you wouldn’t of though it was his debut.

Players like Sanchez Watt, Ignasi Miquel, Oğuzhan Özyakup, Chuks Aneke etc are expected to go out on loan to Championship and League One sides soon. With likely to continue playing players like Francis Coquelin, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Emmanuel Frimpong but having experience first team players on the substitute bench in the quarter finals.
