Reserves Lose, Carling Cup Approaching, U18’s Playing At Emirates

by on October 22, 2011

Arsenal Reserves suffered their first defeat of the season against West Brom Reserves at The Hawthorns last Tuesday evening. Vito Mannone and Sebastien Squillaci both featured after recently returning from injury. Defensive midfielder Craig Eastmond started his first game after coming back from a long term injury and Rhys Murphy also returned to make the bench for the match.

Neil Banfield side took the lead in the first-half through inform forward Sanchez Watt who has now scored five goals in six Reserve games this season. But goals from Saido Berahino and Zoltan Gera gave the home side the lead at half-time. Then Scottish international Graham Dorrans got the Baggies third goal early in the second half, which was the last goal of the match and it ended 3-1 to West Brom.

After coming on as a second half sub Rhys Murphy he sustained a hamstring injury and is likely to be out of action for four to six weeks. The Ireland U-21 striker only recently returned from a hamstring injury which kept him out for the opening two months of the season.

With the Carling Cup next week a number of players will be wanting to be in Arsene Wenger first team squad against Bolton next Tuesday. In the previous round against Shrewsbury Town Oguzhan Ozyakup, Chuks Aneke and Ryo Miyaichi all made their first team debuts. Sanchez Watt, Nico Yennaris, Daniel Boateng and Damian Martinez were all unused substitutes against the league two side.

Last Friday Chuks Aneke, Oguzhan Ozyakup and Ignasi Miquel all trained with the first team. The trio are likely to be in Arsene Wenger squad for the Bolton game next week. Also on Friday Arsenal announced Ireland U21 midfielder Conor Henderson and forward Sanchez Watt had extended their contracts with Arsenal.

After Arsenal match against Stoke City in the Premiership on Sunday, Steve Bould U18’s side are playing a friendly against Chelsea U18’s. Arsenal U18’s defender Isaac Hayden has been called up to England U17’s squad so he will miss the game at the Emirates. But expect to see talented players like Jon Toral, Serge Gnabry, Zak Ansah etc.

Their is a possibility next Tuesday that the Reserves are playing a friendly against Ipswich Town Reserves. And the U18’s could be playing Ipswich Town U18’s as well.  Even though it’s likely the likes of Chuks Aneke, Ignasi Miquel
will be in Arsene Wenger squad for the Carling Cup later that day.
