U18’s Win & Reserves In For A Tough Test

by on October 17, 2011

Arsenal U18s played Southampton U18s on Saturday with the only goal of the match coming from in-form striker Phil Roberts, who now has five goals in his last three games for Steve Bould’s side. Next weekend the U18s will be playing at the Emirates after the Arsenal match against Stoke in the Premiership. It will be a friendly against Chelsea U18s who they recently played and beat 3-0. If you are going to the match you’re likely to see talented youngsters like Jon Toral, Serge Gnabry, Zak Ansah etc.

The Reserves are back this week after having their game against Sunderland rearranged due to international call-ups which was scheduled to be played last Monday at Underhill. Neil Banfield’s side will be playing West Brom Reserves on Tuesday evening who are currently top of the Reseve League South. With Arsenal in second place undefeated after winning three and drawing two so far this season. Many players will be eager to impress because of the Carling Cup against Bolton in a couple of weeks time and wanting to be in Arsene Wenger squad for it.

Two of the stand out players for the Reserve team this season have been midfielders Chuke Aneke and Oğuzhan Özyakup. Both recently made their debuts for the first team against Shrewsbury in the Carling Cup last month. They have formed a good partnership in the center of midfield with both of them rotating the deeper role and the more advanced attacking role behind the main striker. The Reserves play the same formation as the first team do so there is normally another center midfield alongside Aneke and Özyakup in the holding role.

Highly rated teenager Ryo Miyaichi has been playing for Neil Banfield side in recent weeks and getting an assist in the last match against Swansea Reserves. I would expect he will feature against West Brom on Tuesday evening. A player who is in very good form this season is Sanchez Watt with four goals in five games this season and will be looking to continue his good form against West Brom.

One player from the Reserve team who has been training with Arsene Wenger team is Nico Yennaris who is an option for the right back spot because of Sagna injury. Wenger said this on Friday when asked about the right back spot “We have a young boy in the reserve team Nico Yennaris”. This could mean Yennaris could feature against Bolton in the Carling Cup in a couple of weeks time.
