Bring on the Swans and Mertesacker’s first interview.

by on September 9, 2011

Good morning all. I’m not going to be around tomorrow morning so I’ll get the Swansea preview out of the way today then. It’s been a bit strange. As Arseblogger pointed out this morning, yesterday would have usually seen all kinds of interviews and news going up in the official site yet the only interview I can see came out this morning and nothing has been mentioned about the pre-match presser. That could well just be because the boss was waiting to get all of the players back from international duty before giving out injury news and what not.

Anyways, injury news there is. If that makes sense. We know already that Song, Gervinho and Jenkinson are suspended, Frimpong makes his return. Besides the long-term absentees of Wilshere, Diaby and Vermaelen there aren’t really any injury concerns. Theo Walcott seems to have overcome the knock he picked up with England, although Tomas Rosicky could be rested after taking a knock to his knee. At least we now have the depth in the squad to be able to properly rotate. He also said that Andre Santos is a bit short in terms of fitness and Kieran Gibbs is back, so that might be a bit of a hint there.

I suppose line-up wise that gives us a kind of:

Most of those seem pretty likely, unless Szczesny is rested for Fabianski. I think that’s how the midfield will line-up, especially if Rosicky is rested. Arshavin is a question mark because Benayoun might play there. Or Park if he can play out wide. I think Oxo could easily come off the bench as well following his amazing international week. I think that’s a decent shout. Let me know who you would pick in the comments section.

Oxo has obviously got quite a bit of media attention this week after his exploits for the England U-21 side. He doesn’t want to stop there though. That’s not particularly surprising, he definitely has the potential to be world-class. He also spoke about his nerves at joining the best club in the world. He appears to be making the transition quite well. He’s certainly doing all he can to get appearances. The next step for him is obviously to take his chances on the pitch when he get minutes. I know that Theo Walcott has been helping him out a lot with settling down and getting used to being at Arsenal. He even took him to his barber!

I haven’t got a video of Wenger’s pre-match interview yet, but I have got Per Mertesacker’s first Arsenal interview. Check that link for Wenger’s official interview and his pre-match presser later on.

He's a big lad...

Two other videos as well. As I said in an earlier post, Aaron Ramsey won the man of the match award in Wales’ match against England. While I was pleased, I was a bit surprised, I didn’t think anyone really played that well. Having said that, these highlights of his performance convinced me otherwise. It’s easy to forget that Aaron isn’t a ‘flair’ player. He doesn’t put in a good performance by making one incredible pass, although he has that ability. He plays so well because he’s so assured in possession and always provides a creative outlet. I’ve forgotten who it was, but I remember someone on twitter comparing him to an artist with ’90 minutes of gentle brush strokes’. That’s not a bad way of putting it. As I’ve said before, I hope he plays in that more advanced role now, I can’t wait to see him performing to his full potential.

I’ve also found this. It’s pretty epic. Watch it.

That’s pretty much it then, as Nick said in his post yesterday, we could absolutely demolish Swansea. Or it could be another Hull/West Brom moment. I don’t really see that happening with the likes of Arteta likely to make their debuts I think there will be a lot of positive energy from the fans for the team to feed off. I know that the Carling Cup final is a pretty big lesson in taking results for granted, but I really can’t see an upset on the cards this weekend. There, I’ve just jinxed it haven’t I. Oh well.

That really is it for today. All the usual gibberish, follow me on twitter @SavageGooner, ‘like’ us on facebook, check out the online newspaper and be sure to comment below. What do you think the result will be? Is my team the one you would pick? Who will impress? Which of the new signings are you most looking forward to seeing?

He's not quite as big. Certainly faster though.
