Vermaelen out for two months, first impressions of Arteta, an Afobe loan and… a protest? Really?

Thomas Vermaelen hears that Martin Atkinson will be performing the surgery

Might as well start with the big one then. Northbanklower broke the news yesterday evening on twitter that Thomas Vermaelen was set to have surgery on his ankle. The details were a bit sketchy, but skimming the more reliable news this morning, it looks like he could be out for one or two months. By more reliable I mean Arseblog News. I suppose the Mirror counts as well. Speaking of injuries, it looks like Theo Walcott might have picked up a knock with England. It doesn’t seem to be serious, but I suppose we’ll see just how serious it is by how much of a part he plays tonight for England.

On the Vermaelen note, we can at least be grateful that we have Mertesacker to cover for him! If Mertesacker fits in well then we wouldn’t even need to rush Vermaelen back. If these two months off mean that he’s less likely to pick up injuries later on in his career, I won’t be complaining. I’m told that the club didn’t know about Vermaelen’s surgery until after the transfer window. It was a quick decision and a quick operation apparently.

Aaron Ramsey, who will be in action for Wales tonight against England, has been speaking about how important the lack of Jack Wilshere could be.

“I know he’s been struggling with his ankle. It’s a big blow, he had a massive season last season he showed to everyone what he is capable of doing.

“I thought we played pretty well together in pre-season so it’s a big blow for us and Arsenal. Hopefully now he can just get back as quick as possible and makes a speedy recovery from it.”

You would think that the addition of Mikel Arteta to the squad will help Aaron out a lot. He’s looked like he’s been carrying a lot of responsibility so far this season, both creatively and defensively with the absence of Alex Song and later Emmanuel Frimpong. Mikel operates pretty deeply himself so Aaron should be able to operate in his more natural game, pushed up in behind the striker. With a bit of luck, he’ll be back to his more creative advanced role.

A few bad injuries then, maybe Arsene could do with giving this a read. (courtesy of @LadyArse)

Yesterday also saw Mikel Arteta’s official pictures and what not appear on the website. He looks a natural in the red and white doesn’t he? The pictures show that he’s also been training with the club. Obviously he’s been training with the reserves because a lot of the first-team are off on international duty. According to this Conor Henderson tweet, he didn’t look too bad either.

The arrival of Chu-Young Park could well see Benik Afobe go out on loan as he’s pushed further down the pecking order. He had a great spell out at Huddersfield last season, but it looks like a Championship club would be the most likely destination at the moment, with Millwall and Crystal Palace touted as two likely destinations. Speaking of Benik Afobe, the young forward has been talking about the new signings that came in before the transfer window shut and reckon that they will only serve to help the team.

In other news, Arsene Wenger’s appeal against his UEFA touchline ban has been rejected. How idiotic. I’m not even going to begin with this one, save to say that I really do think it’s corruption beyond idiocy. A misunderstanding on the part of an inexperienced UEFA official means that Arsene Wenger is getting a ban for talking to the man next to him about what he wanted a third man to say/do after he believed that he would be allowed to do so. Seriously, what do they expect a manager to do? Talk about the weather?

We’ve been linked with another Barca wonderkid. Good times. In five years we can sell them all back making massive profits!

Seeing as we’re speaking about the youngsters, why not watch the highlights of the U-18s win over MK Dons? This bunch of youngsters, the first-year scholars and school-boys are rated pretty highly. By pretty highly, I mean really highly. Maybe even higher than the JET, Wilshere et al group that won the double? I think they did the double. England U-21s won 4-1 after going one down against Israel. I wouldn’t usually mention it, it’s just that AOC kind of had a part to play. Watch the highlights. 3 assists and a penalty won. Not a bad days work. I think it’s obvious why Wenger rates him so highly.

A bit of opinion before I finish up then. I’m told that the pessimists are springing into gear. They’re protesting before the Swansea match. Why? Because we haven’t spent money or something idiotic like that. Really? What happened at the end of the transfer window then? I know that they have the right to voice their opinions, which means that I have the right to voice mine. I just think it’s idiotic. Even if they’re right and speak for the majority of Arsenal fans, what good could possibly come of it? The window is shut. Even if this team were unbelievably shite, all it should get from now until January is support. The first home-match of the season, because we were hardly in shape when we faced ‘Pool and there’ll be a protest. Outstanding. The best part, they are representing the ‘silent majority’. What a load of bollocks.

A bit of plugging then. You’re probably used to this by now, but if you don’t already then be sure to follow me on twitter @SavageGooner. We’ve also set up a page on facebook so if you’re a facebook user then you can ‘like’ us here.

Another plug for our newspaper as well. It’s got feeds from the best Arsenal sites and updates twice a day, so if you’re looking to catch up with the Arsenal news, look no further. Don’t forget, you can find Nick’s post from earlier today right here. I also spoke to Sam (15yearoldgooner) about the comings and goings during the transfer window. I know not many people read the chats I have with Sam, but I would really really really recommend them. Seriously, if you were to read one thing on my blog this month (except this obviously) make it that interview.
