Jagielka bid rejected, JET for sale and AOC out the window?

by on July 21, 2011

Lets start with the big one then. Yesterday evening Wearethenorthbank published a post about a £12m bid for Phil Jagielka being turned down by Everton.  Obviously Jagielka is a name that has been touted before, but he would appear to be first-choice ahead of Samba and Cahill because he’s maybe a ‘more technical’ defender. According to the article

Jagielka, 28, has long been Arsene Wenger’s first choice centre back target.

Having failed to sign the England international last summer and in January, Arsenal are keen to get their man, although Jagielka and his family are settled in the north west.

To be honest, I don’t think any of the three defenders (or four if you count Scott Dann) we’ve been linked with are world beaters, but of the three (or four) I think Jagielka’s experience may tip it in the Evertonian’s favour. I still wouldn’t mind young Kyle Bartley getting a chance though. This whoscored article has more on the stats of our defenders last season and the possible purchases.

The Juan Mata rumours are back with an article from ESPN. Despite wanting to cling onto their starlet, it appears that the Spanish side are willing to part with their man if a good enough offer comes in.

“The possibility exists that Mata will leave the club,” Valencia manager Unai Emery told Marca.

“We want him to stay and Mata has also expressed his desire to stay at Valencia, but at the same time we cannot stop a player who really wants to leave for money or for a bigger club.

“So, if there is a large financial offer from any club, that is good for both us and him, we will have to let him leave.”

I’m not sure whether Mata was maybe lined up as a replacement in case either Cesc or Nasri left, but I do rate him so I suppose the only thing now is to see if a) we’re interested and b) whether we will front the cash to get Mata. It’s well known that Valencia’s finances are far from healthy and they’ve sold off big players already with the Davids Silva and Villa leaving last summer.

The Mirror reckon JET has been offered to Championship clubs (and anyone else I suppose) for around £1m. A massive talent no doubt, but he’s done nowt but stroll around in professional matches and he won’t be missed as much as he thinks.

The Sun reckons Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will only be available for £12m straight up. I was told that the most we had offered was £10m and the Sun has even lower numbers. I’m not sure where that leaves us. If we leave it here, Wenger will come under fire for not doing anything in the transfer window, if he pursues the deal then he’ll come under fire for buying youngsters. It seems like a lose-lose situation unfortunately.

It must be Arsenal day at the Sun because they’ve been talking about how there is pressure inside the club on Arsene Wenger to spend. Seems pretty stupid to me, surely you would have to pretty idiotic to start passing judgements on our dealings in the transfer window and our failures before the window is even over! I doubt that AW is really under that much pressure at the moment, maybe actually during the season but not now. Not unless we spend £93m on Titus Bramble, slap a £732581270m price tag on Manuel Almunia and sell Cesc to Barca for a kitkat and a voucher for 10% off your home insurance when your go with direct line. Luckily, none of those things appear to happening.
In other news, Hector Bellerin made his debut today in a friendly against Watford, he played on the right wing and scored a goal. Can’t ask for much more than that can you?

One last thing, Theo Walcott has been talking about meeting his mentor, Theirry Henry ahead of the Emirates Cup and has also been speaking about new-boy Ryo Miyaichi. Good times.

That’s it for today. Be sure to check out Nick’s column from earlier today:  ‘Denilson-crab goes back to the sea, Xavi and Guardiola excrete from the mouth‘. Until next time peeps. @SavageGooner
