The beginning of the end for Cesc?

by on June 27, 2011

I’m writing this post with a BBC Sport story open in another tab. It’s entitled ‘Arsenal willing to sell Fabregas‘. I usually try quite hard to avoid writing about this saga because the situation is, in my humble opinion, quite simple. Barcelona need to either meet our valuation or kindly f*ck off. With Cesc set to visit Barcelona next week, I’m sure that they would want to get a deal sorted before then, the only obstacle is our club. This is why I don’t think anything has changed. If, and it’s a big if, Barcelona reach our valuation for the player then let him go. I don’t think there has been a change in attitude here. The problem is, they won’t meet it. The ball is firmly in their court, at the moment all they’re achieving is kicking it over the wall into the back-garden of that grumpy old git who lives next door.

In other news, Alex Song didn’t bow to the greatness of Samuel Eto’o and as such has been sentenced to a few years in kindergarten. Long may this continue, or until January at least. In other news, Gervinho has ‘set his heart’ on joining us this summer apparently. For a target we were apparently interested in, there doesn’t seem to be that much noise here with talks apparently ‘slow’. It remains to be seen when/if he will join the club. There’s even more competition in the race to sign Ricky Alvarez, bringing the total number of clubs after him to 2643697698721358123. That’s got to be some kind of record. Wenger has been speaking about the possibility of Gael Clichy staying at the club but if he hadn’t signed up until now, why would he suddenly change his mind?

Most people no doubt have already heard the Mata for £18m rumours already.  I remember tweeting someone soon after the end of the season about Mata, I think I read somewhere that we had met with his dad/agent but I wasn’t sure about how true it was. Having said that, I don’t know whether this story really has legs. It looks like a bit of a non-runner to me, I haven’t seen many sources or quotes but I suppose the only thing to do is wait and see.

While you sit around your computers waiting for Mata to sign, you could do worse than read the first ever Nick Palmer Column: ‘Introductions‘. It’s a good read and there’s only more to come (unfortunately) from our friend Nick. That’s it for today, sorry for the lack of blogging over the weekend. Alcohol and all. I’m sure you know what I mean. Yours, @savagegooner
